Generative Fabrics:
Textile and Movement Workshop

Using textiles to ignite new sensory pathways in the body, this free workshop will explore the relationship between costume and dance; questioning how garments can act as generative tools for movement creation. Engaging in a series of improvisational prompts and explorations, we’ll work on deeply tuning to our felt senses and igniting our imaginations.
The workshop will include discussions about becoming and transformation, and participants will be invited to build their own sensory garments. Through improvisation we will explore how costume and sensation can interact to create feelings of tension, compression, and release in the body, that through our imaginations might allow for new understandings of self to emerge.
This workshop is open to pre-professional and professional dancers, as well as movement practitioners of any form.
Capacity: Max 12 participants
Cost: Free

In ‘slug’ I seek to transform the self; to metamorphosize through costume, movement, and character into a creature that expresses my long repressed yet painfully persistent rage. In order to achieve this transformation, I work with sensations of disgust and decay. I imagine my anger as a blistering rot, which through years of repression is leaking, boiling, and itching to crawl out. It feels harsh, ugly and cathartic, and I aspire for the work’s movement vocabulary to mirror these sensations. In the studio, I work with a somatic framework, questioning where my anger manifests and identifying its physical sensations. I question how these sensations can generate movements that alter my perception of my body and sense of self. The sound score is built by manipulating found sounds and recordings of my voice and body using Max MSP.
The showing will be followed by a short talk-back.
